Scarlett Johansson is an American actor and singer who was born in New york city, in the United States on November 22, 1984. Her work has garnered her praise across a vast spectrum of genres such as period dramas, thrillers as well as action adventure. Johansson, the daughter of a film producer and an architect was raised on the streets of New York City. Her twin brother Hunter were the youngest of four siblings. As early as age seven, she was making auditions for commercials on television. She entered the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute shortly after, and later attended the Professional Children's School, Manhattan to further her education. As a child, she starred alongside Ethan Hawke in the Off-Broadway production Sophistry and, at the age of nine she made her film debut as Rob Reiner's North (1994). Johansson later appeared for the first time in Just Cause (1995) but her first big break came with Manny & Lo (1996) a coming-of-age film about orphaned sisters who run away. She next earned critical praise for her character as an adolescent who suffers a disfiguring accident within The Horse Whisperer (1998) while she was also acclamated as cynical teen outcast Rebecca in Ghost World (2001).
